Adults considering going on a trip with their children and wanting the utmost safety and comfort should reserve seats with American Airlines. Given that the fares for adults and children vary and the policies are different, it is important to check with the airline's children's policy prior to completing a reservation. The policies for different age groups of children also vary, so you must go through them carefully.

The policies imposed by American Airlines for allowing children to  fly on the flight are as follows:

Infant (under 2 years) Policy

  • A child under 2 years of age will be considered an infant, and it is not necessary to reserve a separate flight ticket for the same. The infant can fly on an adult's lap during the journey.
  • An adult can add only 1 infant to their reservation.
  • One piece of carry-on baggage will be allowed per child on the flight.
  • The person adding the lap infant on their reservation should be more than 16 years old.
  • An infant cannot travel on an American Airlines flight with a flyer who is younger than 16 years.

Children (aged 2 and above) Policy 

  • A child above 2 years of age should reserve a separate flight ticket in the children category with an adult at American Airlines.
  • A child under 5 years old is not allowed to fly on the flight unaccompanied. For safety concerns, an adult should travel with the child.
  • An unaccompanied minor between the ages of 5 and 14 can be reserved for an American Airlines flight. However, there will be separate charges, and an airline crew member will escort the child from the airport to board and deboard the flight.

How to book a flight ticket of a child with American Airlines?

If your child is above the age of 2, here is the procedure given that you must follow:

  • Open the American Airlines page and enter all flight ticket requirements,
  • On the "No. of Travelers" section, you must select the number of children,
  • Then, select the flight suitable for you,
  • Proceed with entering the details of travelers,
  • Next, make the total fare payment online,
  • Now, your booking with children at American Airlines will be confirmed. 

How do you add an infant to an already booked flight with American Airlines?

In case the reservation has already been made with American Airlines, and now you would like to add your infant to the same, the following are the steps you must follow:

  • Reach the American Airlines main page,
  • Go to the "Manage Trips/Check-In" section,
  • You must input your last name and reservation confirmation code to make the search,
  • Once your reservation details are available on the page, you need to look for the "Add an Infant" option,
  • Enter all the necessary details and follow the mentioned prompts to successfully add the infant to your reservation.

Does American Airlines charge for a 2 year old?

Yes, there are charges imposed for the reservations of a child 2 or more than 2 years old at American Airlines. The charges will not be applicable until the child has not turned 2 and is traveling with a parent on the lap.

What age do kids fly free on American Airlines?

Children under 2 years of age are free to fly on American Airlines flights. However, to travel with their little child, one should add an infant on a lap to their reservation 48 hours in advance of the flight's departure time.
